TUGEGARAO ITINERARY AND PLACES TO VISIT
St. Peter Metropolitan Cathedral – Saint Peter Metropolitan Cathedral—widely referred to as Tuguegarao Cathedral—is an 18th-century Baroque-style Roman Catholic church situated on Rizal Street in Barangay Centro 10, Tuguegarao City, Philippines. Constructed originally by Dominican friars, the cathedral serves as the seat of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao and ranks among the largest churches in the Cagayan Valley region. In 1982, the National Historical Institute—the forerunner of today’s National Historical Commission of the Philippines—installed a historical marker on the church grounds, outlining its rich heritage in a brief inscription.
San Jacinto Church – San Jacinto Ermita Church is a historic chapel built in 1604. It underwent reconstruction after World War II and served as a headquarters for American soldiers during the Filipino-American War in 1899.
Our Lady of Chartres Chapel in Saint Paul College of Tuguegarao – The Our Lady of Chartres Chapel at St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) on College Avenue in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, is a magnificent full-scale replica of France’s renowned medieval Chartres Cathedral. Constructed between 2005 and 2011, the sanctuary acts as a living catechism, showcasing over 100 intricate stained-glass windows. The chapel serves as the primary spiritual center for Paulinians, boasting impressive spires, flying buttresses, and relics of saints. It is highly regarded as both an architectural and religious landmark in the Cagayan Valley region.
Buntun Bridge – A river bridge that connects Tugegarao City to Solana in Cagayan.
Horno Ruins, Tuguegarao – The Horno Ruins of Tuguegarao City is a 16th Century Spanish Port located at Barangay Centro 09 (Bagumbayan) that was used to bake and dry clay in the province.
Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Piat – Initially called Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario, the statue depicting the dark-skinned Virgin Mary and Child Jesus was introduced to the country from Macau in 1604. The Dominican friars employed the statue as a gentle approach to calm and convert the local Itawis tribes, who were initially resistant. Travel time is around 1 hour (40km) from the city center.
Iguig Calvary Hills – The site covers a large area featuring an old church, stations of the cross, and hilly landscapes. The view of the Cagayan River from the back is breathtaking. It’s a well-known pilgrimage destination for Catholics, particularly during Lent and Holy Week, set within an eleven-hectare estate. Sadly when we went there, it wasn’t maintained well. The statues and the old church is a reason enough to visit this place.
Callao Cave – is celebrated globally as the archaeological site where the 67,000-year-old remains of Homo luzonensis, also referred to as “Callao Man,” were uncovered, offering evidence of early human presence in Southeast Asia. Additionally, it is renowned for its stunning natural limestone formations and the chapel resembling a cathedral situated in its first chamber. It is located 30 mins (22 km) from the city center. There’s a fee entering the cave. A guide will be assigned to your group.
Callao Boating – It is just across the Callao Cave. You have to pay a fee on riding a boat.
